It’s never too late for a change

Has the pandemic left you pondering or indeed searching for a new career?

Contrary to common perception, it’s never too late for a career change and you’re never too old to try something new. You just need to be determined to MAKE IT HAPPEN.

new career

But whatever the predicament or situation, make sure that whatever you choose to do or pursue is for the right reason.

Passion may very well be a trait that makes the biggest difference in employee output and company commitment but it’s not the be all and end all.

In fact some experts argue that following your passion is the worst kind of advice. Doing something habitually and just for money may eventually dampen your passion and make it lacklustre.

So find something that works and that you think will keep you happy in the workplace.

What is it you’re really seeking from your next work adventure in life? Is it being a team leader? Perhaps you’ve got a knack for being creative or problem solving? Or maybe you just love working with others and being part of a team.

Next, you need to look at the obstacles. Would this new career entail you doing some kind of course, internship or heading back to university or college?

There are a whole range of unexpected career options just waiting out there that you never thought existed.

Here’s some tips to send you on your way to finding a new career:

Knuckle down and research
Write up a wish list and a list of jobs you don’t want. Try researching some of the roles you’re interested in online and perhaps try reaching out to people to ask them about their fields. See if any companies out there in your field of interest have any work experience placements or internships.

Reach out for help
Sometimes you can get inspiration or ideas from the most unlikely of sources. Trying speaking to friends or family members about work options or perhaps the work in their fields. You may not necessarily be interested in their fields, but it may give you an idea or an indication of something similar that you would like to do.

Get your CV in order
Before you start applying for jobs, make sure your CV is in order. Employers will more than often turn their noses up at CVs if they’re messy and confusing. Here’s some great pointers about making your CV the pick of the punch! Once your CV is polished and ready to go, start knocking on doors and sending them out. A good tip is to avoid ‘one click apply’ options online. Actually make the effort to fill in forms in full when applicable.

All good things come to those who wait
Once the job hunting commences, it is so important to be patient. There will be days, weeks and even months when the journey will look perilous and feel demoralising but it’s so important not to give up hope. A good tip is to lay out a timetable or schedule when it comes to things like job searching, applying for new jobs, interviews and, in some cases, serving notice to your current employer.
