Therapeutic Care Worker
Little Acorns is a Therapeutic Community for children aged between 5-14, which has been running for over twenty years. We offer 24/7 therapeutic care to looked after children who live in the home and access the residential school on the same site.
Our main purpose is to address the child’s developmental trauma as a result of abuse and/or neglect from caregivers and to work therapeutically with their insecure/disorganised attachments to aid them to resolve their early conflict and reintegrate into a family environment such as foster care. Coinciding with this we work therapeutically with secondary diagnoses such as ADHD, ASD, GDD, SPD etc. We work with a variety of therapists and there is a strong focus on the therapeutic team being equipped to meet the child’s daily needs.
Description of vacancy
The vacancy will be to join the therapeutic team and work alongside them day to day in a shift pattern.
- To provide thoughtful care and therapeutic intervention within our homely environment for children aged 5 – 14 who have experienced disruption and trauma in their early childhood. To further understanding and seek ever improving outcomes for those children in our care
- Ensure that all policies and procedures are adhered to within own practice
- To develop provisions, practices and interventions to aid children in achieving their potential
- Ensure the safety of children is at no time compromised and that Child Protection policies are adhered to at all times
- Bring energy and enthusiasm to the children’s play, education and interests
- Engage children in a variety of enjoyable life experiences
- Participate in the evolution of provisions and treatment plans
- Provide and support relationships within the child group to enable children to form friendships
- Build safe caring and supportive relationships with the children
- Work co-operatively as part of an interdependent team engaging with co-workers in an honest and professional manner
- Work co-operatively with other Little Acorns staff including external consultants and other external professionals
- Facilitate and support the child’s relationships with significant others
- Provide safety and boundaries within relationships with the children without impinging on a child’s privacy or dignity
- Seek to understand the communication within challenging behaviour
- Apply positive intervention techniques and behaviour management skills to safeguard children and colleagues (in line with training provided)
- Work co-operatively with your professional supervisor to ensure a good supervision relationship
- To be responsible for and aim to improve the physical, social and emotional well-being of the children
- Plan and organise, activities, play and recreation for the child group
- Work with and manage difficult and challenging behaviour in line with training and direction
- Participate in all aspects of the day-to- day running of the household including preparation of food, and household chores
- Be an active participant in team meetings and reflective forums to ensure transparency and good communication, and develop the communities models of care
- Actively participate in supervision and appraisal with the aim of improving own practice
- Attend and participate in internal and external training where provided
- Maintain a working knowledge of Little Acorns Policies and Procedures
- Maintain a working knowledge of relevant legislation such as the National Care Standards relating to Children’s Homes
- Responsibly administer medication in line with the child’s care plan, medical advice and Little Acorns procedure when asked to do so
- Participate in all aspects of record-keeping to ensure accurate documentation of practices
- Maintain and promote good relationships with co-workers, management, external professionals and families of the children in our care
- Undertake any reasonable duties beneficial to the running of the house as directed by management
- Observe relevant legislation and ensure others observe legislation, e.g. Health & Safety, Food Hygiene, Equal Opportunities etc.
30 hours in a shift pattern (Mon-Sun, 1 weekend on/1 off)
Minimum of GCSE grades A to C English and Maths.
- Basic computer skills
- Good Maths and English Skills
- Fluent English language
- Ability to work alongside challenging children
- Ability to communicate within a team
On the job training with the employer whilst working towards the Apprenticeship Framework - consisting of the NVQ, CYPW,Technical Certificate and Functional Skills if appropriate.
Regular work based assessments/observations carried out by Kent Training and Apprenticeships (KT&A) Tutor Assessor, to determine competency and meet with Awarding Body standards.
