Southern Water are launching their 2018 Mechanical Apprenticeship Scheme.

We are seeking candidates for positions available in Medway, Thanet, Wingham and surrounding areas.

This role offers a starting salary of £13,500 (First Year) along with comprehensive training and mentoring.

Southern Water operates in the South East of England and employs over 2000 people. At Southern water we are not only passionate about water we are passionate about developing the people who work here and have a wide range of training opportunities. We also like to get involved in the communities we serve and since 1992 we have run programmes which have taught over 750 000 children to swim. We also support local charities as well as an overall company charity which currently is Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.

We are currently recruiting mechanical apprentices in Kent, who are interested in a varied and practical career in the water/wastewater industry who will be able to handle the demanding technical training of a 4 year advanced modern apprenticeship. The apprenticeship scheme at Southern Water offers apprentices a permanent role leading to a job as a Mechanical Technician. On completion of the apprenticeship you will achieve an NVQ Level 3.

The first year of the apprenticeship will be a residential training programme (Sunday to Friday). The residential establishment will be in the South East of England.

During the remainder of the apprenticeship, apprentices will be based in Kent working with a Mentor to complete their apprenticeship. Mentors will be experienced Mechanical Technicians who are selected for their knowledge of the Company and their job, providing a guiding presence during training. In addition to their Mentor, apprentices will also be supported by their team members, our apprenticeship programme lead as well as our specialist training provider.

We require our apprentices to have, or expect to achieve a minimum of 5 GCSEs (Grade C or above/or equivalent), including Maths and English. An interest and/or skills in mechanical would be a distinct advantage. They should not be colour blind. As we cover a large area in the South-East, successful applicants must obtain a full driving licence before the end of their apprenticeship and we will support them by reimbursing the cost of 10 driving lessons.

Modern Apprentices are paid on a developing scale throughout their apprenticeship, starting on £13,500 apprentices will receive incremental increases each year subject to satisfactory performance. Apprentices will also be entitled to join our pension scheme, 25 days annual leave, PPE and tools.
