Job Purpose

The postholder is responsible for driving and protecting a positive, dynamic and professional image.

Duties of the Post Holder

By the end of November each year (in preparation for the following year), in liaison with the Head of Policy & Communications, prepare the Communications Plan and lead on its delivery, monitoring progress and providing timely and relevant input throughout the year as required.

To cultivate positive relationships and provide a central corporate point of contact (press office) with the media and media/PR contacts in other (particularly port-related) organisations (e.g. ferry companies, statutory agencies, local authorities etc).

 To provide a daily media report to management utilising a paid-for monitoring service.

To proactively seek out and execute PR and media opportunities and ensure the most positive exposure from all such activity in all its forms (e.g. TV, radio, newspapers, magazines and websites).

To agree media handling and filming requests, ensuring that all facilitated requests provide either positive exposure, good levels of revenue, or both. The filming tariffs should be reviewed on an annual basis and a filming log should be maintained.

 Prepare and issue press releases to support corporate, project and business stream activity, marketing campaigns and community engagement, working collaboratively with the Marketing & Social Media Executive and CSR & Internal Communications Executive to deliver the Communications & Marketing Plans.

To develop an analytics tool to monitor the effectiveness of media/social media communications and sentiment.

Attend external meetings and events as directed by the Head of and the CEO. This may involve national and overseas travel and working away from the home base.

 The post holder is the line manager for the CSR & Internal Communications Executive and must act appropriately and in accordance with polices and procedures.

 The post holder is required to be included on the duty roster for on-call media duties.

The post holder is required to undertake the necessary administrative tasks associated with the role (incl financial procedures).

Generic Duties

To contribute to the Customer Relationship Management system, reporting and recording stakeholder interaction and analysing trends.

Carry out all supervisory responsibilities for Departmental staff, as appropriate, in accordance with the organisation’s policies and procedures, as amended from time to time, and to positively ensure appropriate  succession plans exist throughout the teams within the division.

Comply with environmental instructions and to identify potential risks to the environment, or areas where environmental impact can be reduced.

To be responsible for the identification and management of risks, both hazardous and opportunistic, and to actively promote a risk aware and positive safety culture in accordance with the Board’s Risk Management and Health & Safety policies.

This post requires the holder to work closely with the Head of, Directors, GMs and the CEO in achieving the organisation’s objectives and it is therefore impossible to cover in this job description all aspects of the role.

The post holder is expected and required to be flexible and accept additional tasks and responsibilities as requested by the Head of, Directors, General Managers and the CEO from time to time. These will be reasonable in relation to the post holder’s skills, abilities and status, may be in the UK or overseas and may require the post holder to work additional hours in order to achieve the mission. Time off in lieu may be approved against these requests.


Degree level or equivalent professional qualification in a related area

Evidence of continuing professional and personal development

Track record of contributing to and delivering on a communication and marketing plan for a national business or projects of national importance.

Strong understanding of communications and media management.

Ability to manage difficult stakeholder relations and difficult communication issues (including crisis communication).

Good knowledge of the ports and shipping industry (with relevant contacts within the communications teams from the industry) and UK political system (national, regional and local).

Proven ability to produce and effectively deliver communication materials. Track record of using various communication channels and delivering successful campaigns with positive results.

Experience of successfully working with and contributing to a results-driven team Excellent communication and presentation skills

Able to be on 24 hour call out on a rotational basis

Full driving licence and use of own car with Business Use Car Insurance


Chartered qualification in relevant discipline.

A successful track record in developing and implementing performance management, quality control and other appropriate.

Understanding of the local area and good knowledge of local, regional and national stakeholders.
