SUMMARY The primary purpose of this role is to apply process safety expertise to: •Design and develop robust crystallization processes for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) which deliver materials suitable for drug formulation while meeting quality specifications. •Assist in the development of crystallization processes for intermediates, including scale-up RESPONSIBILITIES •Partner closely with API team leads and Process Chemists to understand project background, timelines and scope for crystallization development. •Work with Colleagues in Drug Product Development to assess the preferred physical properties for APIs for formulation, and to design robust and scaleable crystallization processes. •Design, perform and report experiments to evaluate crystallization in different conditions, including nomination of commercial crystallization processes of APIs. •Partner with Colleagues in the Process Safety, Pilot Plant and Production areas to assess process safety, robustness on scale up and process ranges to underpin regulatory filings. •Share responsibilities around upkeep of crystallization laboratory equipment to ensure it is maintained in good working order including liaising with equipment manufacturers. •Develop knowledge and experience of process chemistry, crystallization, solid form and impact of API physical properties on formulation to be able to independently lead the development and delivery of commercial API processes. •Compliance to departmental process safety SOPs, best practice guidance and workflows especially with respect to accurate and compliant lab notebook and process safety documentation compliance. •Identification and evaluation of novel crystallisation technologies to help deliver the strategic objectives of Chemical Research & Development and Pharmaceutical Sciences, including involvement with external research organizations and pre-competitive consortia. •Liase with external equipment manufacturers, other Pharmaceutical companies, external consultants & contractors, as requirements determine. May be required to conduct process chemistry and engineering studies. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PhD in an industrial crystallization-relevant topic or BSc Chemistry or BEng Chemical Engineering with proven relevant experience in a laboratory based industrial crystallization role.
