Vacancy overview

As a Materials Controller, you can expect a huge variety of responsibilities. Purchasing both stock and repairable services for the plant, you’ll take charge of stock replenishment and influence materials management for the entire station. It’s a highly regulated, immensely challenging environment. One that will require you to negotiate the best deals, get the best value for money and keep up to speed on market changes. You’ll be working with stakeholders that range from third-party suppliers to senior management, and you’ll be managing inventories that cover engineering basics to highly specific equipment. Budgeting for every component the site needs, you’ll think strategically about procurement. Ultimately, you’ll keep our downtime to an absolute minimum, while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.

Nature and scope

Applications are invited for the post of Material Controller in the Supply Chain Department at Dungeness B Power Station. The successful applicant will be working as a member of the Dungeness B Materials Team and will report directly to the Material Specialist.

Principal accountabilities

The Material Controller will be required to undertake the following activities:

  • Purchasing of both stock items and repairable services
  • Ownership of the stock replenishment process from RFQ to delivery of goods
  • Act as focal point for the materials replenishment process on site
  • To support the Material Specialist review and develop station materials management strategies and procedures in line with corporate policy.
  • Undertake regular performance reviews with key suppliers
  • Underpin delivery of the materials plan through regular and pro-active liaison with internal customers particularly maintenance and outage teams
  • Ensure appropriate actions are taken to ensure a timely flow of conforming materials with stock holding kept to a minimum
  • Identify and implement appropriate direct supply arrangements utilising best practice techniques and supplier expertise to improve internal logistics
  • Maintain appropriate level of external supplier contact to identify and take best advantage of market changes and developments in respect of best practices

Knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience

The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate good knowledge of:

  • The Purchasing Cycle
  • Supplier Positioning
  • Supplier Reviews and Development
  • Basic contract law
  • Inventory Management
  • Strategic procurement concepts
  • Computer literacy is essential – To include Microsoft excel/word
  • Knowledge of best practice in materials management is important
  • It is also necessary that applicants have good communication skills
  • Operating knowledge of a station would be advantageous although not essential
  • As a minimum, candidates will be educated to GCSE/National Qualification standards (or equivalent) that should include “C” and above grade passes in English and Mathematics will have an advantage
  • MCIPS or an equivalent business degree is desirable but not essential
