Main Purpose and scope of job
To assist in running intervention groups, speech groups, social communication groups, education groups and / or holiday camps for 21 Together that assist children, young people and young adults who have Down’s syndrome to develop all aspects of their communication and life skills.
To assist in delivering groups for children and young people with Down's syndrome. The group will focus on any of the following, speech and language / education / social groups / life skills. We are particularly interested in people with a background or interest in speech and language, and / or performing arts education. The performing arts background is not required, but we are looking for upbeat personalities that can enthuse children and young people. Knowledge and experience of working with children with a learning difficulty is preferred but not required.
This is a fun role that requires a committed person who is willing to work well in a team, but is highly motivated, and can work well independently. Well-being and safety of service users is paramount, and an excellent rapport with children and young people is vital.
Training will be provided and there is an expectation that staff will engage with training and use the knowledge and skills effectively within their work. This role would suit those looking for long term Saturday work, including students. We do ask that there is a commitment to remain in post for 24 months at the least as training is comprehensive.
No formal qualifications required, but experience and/or qualifications in speech therapy, teaching (including TA's), wider therapies, performing arts, social care would be desired.
21 Saturdays (approx 09:00 - 16:00) per year, during term time (every other Saturday during term time). Plus 6 days a year to assist at holiday camps in school holidays. Plus additional hours for training and team meetings (approx 15 hours a year).
£9.00 - £12.00 depending on experience.

Duties and Key Responsibilities
Ø To support their team in all aspects of delivering the intervention groups, speech groups, social communication groups, education groups and / or holiday camps.
Ø To assist in the intervention groups as directed by the Group leader or attending therapist / specialist.
Ø To enable all families to access and leave the building safely.
Ø To liaise with parents, answer basic questions and take messages for the group lead.
Ø To set up and tidy away the environment as directed by group lead.
Ø To assist at holiday camps for children and young people with Down’s syndrome. This includes assisting in whole group time, small intervention time, lunch times, free time and set up/clear up. It may also consist of some contact with siblings.
Ø Contribute to the provision of a safe and stimulating play environment.
Ø Assist in the maintenance of appropriate records, registers and reports.
Ø Contribute to and be involved in liaising with parents/carers.
Ø Contribute to team meetings to facilitate the planning and preparation of activities.
Ø Assist in the planning, preparation and delivery of activities, which meet children’s individual developmental needs.
Ø Adhering to all safeguarding requirements and any procedures
Ø Maintain service-user confidentiality at all times.
Ø Attend internal & external meetings as necessary, to ensure the successful delivery and development of the service.
Ø It is the nature of the post that tasks and responsibilities are, in many circumstances, unpredictable and varied. The post holder will therefore be expected to work in a flexible way.
Ø These additional duties will normally be to cover unforeseen circumstances or changes in work, and they will normally be compatible with the regular type of work.
Ø The support worker will work closely with the group lead. It is vital they can work as a team and create a consistent environment and approach within the groups. This approach will be led by the group leader.
Ø The support worker will be responsible for the following of the 21 Together Safeguarding Policy in respect to all sessions and Holiday Camps
Ø The support worker will be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and data protection
Ø The support worker will be aware of and support difference and ensure everyone has equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
Ø The support worker will attend and participate in regular meetings with the 21 Together Management and such training and other learning activities as required by 21 Together from time to time
Skills and Abilities
Ø Excellent rapport with children and young people
Ø Confident communication skills with a range of ages and learning abilities
Ø Effective communication skills both written and spoken
Ø Ability to carry out activities according to guidance from the Speech and Language therapist, specialist teacher and group lead.

Ø Experience of working with children or young people to improve their communication skills.
Ø Experience of providing support for people with Down’s syndrome and their families or of working with people with learning disabilities in social or educational environment.
Ø Experience of working in teams and independently.
Ø Experience of delivering set therapeutic or educational interventions under guidance is preferred.
Knowledge and requirements
Ø Must have a full DBS check or willing to undertake one.
Ø Must have completed Safeguarding Training and have a sound knowledge of safeguarding issues or be willing to undertake this.
Ø Must have completed first aid and safety training or be willing to undertake this.
Ø Should have knowledge of augmentative communication systems, be willing to train on the job, or attend any relevant training as specified by the charity.
Ø Should have knowledge of successful strategies for promoting positive behaviour
Ø Should be able to use Makaton signing or be willing to undergo this training.
