Job Description

An opportunity to gain charity experience while helping people who are homeless this winter.

Shelter Workers (evening or waking night shifts) support the smooth delivery of the Canterbury Community Shelter. The role includes practical tasks (e.g. basic food preparation and service, washing up, cleaning and laundry), alongside supporting shelter guests. Support includes conversations, walking guests to the venue, helping them to settle, recording and handovers, and responding to incidents so that the Shelter remains a safe space. Staff will be on shift with at least one colleague.

Skills and experience can be from paid work or voluntary/community roles:

  • Experience of working with people in a public or community setting.
  • Experience of working in a team.
  • Experience of delivering varied tasks within a set timeframe.
  • Able to communicate clearly and to remain calm under pressure.
  • Able to write concisely in plain English.
  • Able to offer a friendly, non-judgemental service to people experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental ill health, and other challenges.
  • Able to maintain professional boundaries (training will also be provided).

We are recruiting for three roles across a seven-day rota and expect to make multiple appointments. There is flexibility about the number of shifts – please apply and let us know about your preferred working pattern at interview. Appointment is subject to DBS and reference checks.
