Local Democracy Reporter
- Full Time
A unique opportunity has arisen to be the first of the new local democracy reporters - part of a ground-breaking initiative between the BBC and regional publishers
The new reporters, funded by the BBC and employed by publishers, will offer in-depth coverage of our local authorities, ensuring deep scrutiny of the way our local government institutions operate, decisions they make and how they spend public money.
Successful applicants will play a vital part in launching the scheme and ensuring it is a success - with the aim of expanding it in future years.
KM Media Group has been awarded the licence to run the scheme in Kent and Medway. We have already recruited one reporter and are now looking for a second.
The successful candidate will be adept at identifying issues and stories buried in council agendas which need to be brought to the public’s attention.
He or she will establish themselves as a trusted source of news and act as an ambassador for the scheme.
They will be comfortable working under their own initiative and will thrive on the unique challenge this role offers.
Although based in KM newsrooms, the local democracy reporter will be providing copy for all publishers signed up to the scheme, and will be responsible for ensuring all content is politically-neutral and balanced.
He or she will be qualified to NCE-standard or equivalent with a good level of experience of working to daily deadlines, and will be comfortable providing content in text, audio or video format as required.
They will understand the importance of social media and the way it can be used to drive audience and engagement and will thrive under pressure.
The local democracy reporter will be able to demonstrate a deep understanding of the workings of local government and a track record of delivering great ideas for content and building contacts.
This role offers the chance to get involved at the start of a high-profile initiative and help shape the future of the scheme.
A full driving licence is required.
Contracts will last initially for a two year fixed term.
